Body Image Issues Following Breast Cancer Treatment

Toronto and Director, de Souza Institute
This presentation will provide an overview of key issues associated with body image, outline contributing factors
and offer information concerning strategies that can assist a woman to manage the sense of loss, and learn how to
regain a sense of wholeness moving forward. Women will gain an understanding of the specifc issues, and learn
how they can contribute to improving self- image and sexual functioning. The presentation will utilize experiences
from a recently completed randomized controlled trial of a group program designed to address body image
challenges and those associated with sexual functioning.

Facilitated by Dr. Itzhak Brook, MD, MSc, Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at Georgetown University
School of Medicine, Washington DC
Dr. Brook was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2006. As a physician and a laryngectomee, Dr. Brook is able to
offer practical information that can assist laryngectomees and their caregivers in dealing with medical, dental and
psychological issues. Dr. Brook lectures internationally to medical professionals and other groups. He has authored
a book about his experiences entitled My Voice: A Physicians Personal Experience with Throat Cancer .
